Nokia to acquire map application developers gate5 AG
World’s largest maker of mobile phones Nokia has confirmed that they are planning to acquire German mapping software firm gate5 AG.
The financial detail of this deal has not been disclosed to the media. Market analysts believe that Nokia would use the expertise of this company to offer customers maps, routing, and navigation software on mobile phones.
gate5 AG already has developed more than 5,000 city guides, travel guides and services for Telmap, TomTom, Thompson and others. And they sell more than 60,000 units on a monthly basis.
Michael Halbherr, CEO of gate5 spoke about gate5: “We believe a multiplatform strategy for Windows Mobile 5, Palm and others is critical to be widely adopted. A partnership with others OEMs is equally important.”
