Sony battery recall now touches 9.6 million units
Sony’s battery recall now includes as many as 9.6 million units worldwide. This was confirmed by the company in a statement released yesterday.
This statement came just as the company slashed its fiscal year profit forecasts due to the massive battery recalls and price cuts in Japan for the next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console. Sony is due to launch their PS3 gaming console in Japan and USA next month.
The recall is expected to boost the company’s costs by around 51 billion yen in the July-September period. However, this cost does not include any expenditure caused by potential lawsuits being threatened by some of the PC manufacturers involved in the recall.
Almost all the major personal computer manufacturers are recalling laptops shipped with Sony manufactured batteries. These include Dell, Apple, Toshiba, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Sharp and even Sony itself.
