Mobile phone shipments this year might touch 1 billion units
Market analysts ABI Research have said in a report that the mobile phone shipments could indeed touch the magic mark of 1 billion units this year.
The research group said that shipments topped 245 million units in the third quarter and the market is on track to touch the record mark this year itself.
Jake Saunders, research director for ABI said in a statement: “The handset vendors are pulling out all the stops to get their slickest, flattest, largest music memory, biggest mega-pixel camera phones onto the shelves in time for the 4Q-2006 (fourth quarter) holiday jamborees.”
The leading vendors in terms of market share are Nokia, 36 percent; Motorola, 23.3 percent; Samsung, 12.5 percent; Sony Ericsson, 8.1 percent; and LG Electronics, 6.7 percent.
