NVIDIA targeting portable devices as it acquires PortalPlayer
Graphic card maker NVIDIA is one of the dominating players in the market and they are now trying to enter the portable devices market.
The company has announced that they are acquiring PortalPlayer. This company specializes in manufacturing semiconductors and software for digital music players and other devices. And Apple iPod is one of the many devices which used to carry chips made by PortalPlayer.
NVIDIA would be paying US$357 million for the company which also develops hardware solutions for SanDisk’s Sansa c200 and e280 MP3 players.
PortalPlayer is currently also working on supporting a secondary display in future notebook PCs from Acer. NVIDIA President and Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang said in a statement that NVIDIA would now use its new subsidiary to expand into new business sectors.
They would combining its own GPUs with PortalPlayer’s microprocessors to provide solutions for PMPs (personal media players), PDAs (personal digital assistants), portable game players and cell phones
The company already designs power-efficient graphics and video units for cell phones made by Motorola, Samsung, Kyocera, High Tech Computer and Sony Ericsson.
