HCL to enter notebook and laptop market

HCL Infosystems is one of the leading PC manufacturers in the Indian market. The company has now announced their decision to enter the manufacturing of mobile computers and have launched as many as 11 segment-specific ranges of laptops.

George Paul, executive vice-president of the company said in a statement on this new initiative: “We will now start manufacturing laptops at our existing plant at Pondicherry.” The company had just recently increased capacity at its Pondicherry facility from 6,00,000 units to 1 million units per year.

The personal computer market in India is growing fast and the demand for laptops and notebooks is expected to rise in the coming times. As per market estimates the notebook computer market in the country is expected to grow 50 per cent in 2005-06.

HCL already sells laptops produced by Toshiba in the Indian market and are hoping that their own products won’t conflict with the products provided by their partner. HCL laptops are being priced beginning from Rs 27,490 onwards and would be aimed at different segments here in India including doctors, lawyers, women, and CEOs.
