Tata Motors said in a note sent to Congress MLA Sudip Bandopadhyay: “The Singur plant will initially directly employ 2,000 people and is expected to create employment for 10,000 people among vendors and service providers in the vicinity of the plant.’’
Bandopadhyay responded in a statement: “We are impressed by the sort of work the Tatas have done for the uplift of people living in places around their factory. They want to do similar work in Singur. However, we told them that real estate business should not be done on land that would not be required for the car plant and they agreed to it. We also asked them to ensure that farmers are compensated in the best manner possible.”
