Ford Motor considering building diesel engines in India
US based automaker Ford Motor is rumored to be planning to setup a diesel engine manufacturing plant in India. This would be Ford’s move to expand their presence in the diesel car segment, which is growing here in India, as these cars are more fuel-efficient.
As per industrial sources, this plant of Ford would have a manufacturing capacity of about 100,000 units of the 1.4-litre Duratorq engine each year.
The company currently produces around 60,000 vehicles a year at their plant located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It buys the petrol engines from Hindustan Motors Ltd and imports the diesel engines.
Ford declined to confirm these market rumors but said that they are studying various options to grow in India. Ford India’s head Arvind Mathew said: “It is dependent on having the appropriate levels of volume and technology available in India.”
The company sells Endeavour and Fiesta models with Diesel engines in India and these diesel models sell more than their petrol variants.
