Gartner reports that smartphones are getting popular amongst casual users

Market research group Gartner has said that more and more consumers are now preferring to buy smartphones when they go out hunting for a mobile phone.

Todd Kort at researcher Gartner said in a report that this holiday season is expected to see a massive boost in the demand for such phones, which can be used to check emails on the move.

Kort added that they are estimating sales of smartphones to touch 81 million units this year. They are expected to make around 8% of the total sales of mobile phones in the market. Last year, their share was around 6%.

Ross Rubin at researcher NPD added that till some years back smartphones used to be niche products and few people considered buying them. Corporate sector used to be the biggest consumer of such products, which enabled the executives to stay connected to the company’s network on the move.

Now, they are getting cheaper and affordable. Newer products like Motorola Q are also user friendly and are getting increasingly popular amongst casual mobile users.
