DVD players now outnumber VCRs in USA

Nielsen Media Research’s Third Quarter Home Technology Report has finally confirmed that US homes now have more DVD players than the traditional VCR players.

The DVD format is just around 10 years old and it has now reached a mature stage in the US market. The report claimed that 81.2% of all households in the United States have at least one DVD player, while 79.2% of households have a VCR.

Compared to the last year, DVD penetration is up 6%. And it is continuing to grow at an impressive pace. In comparison, people are dumping their VCR players.

The report also said that households having a DVD player rented DVDs at least twice a month. In comparison, people having a VCR player at home ordered videocassettes only once a month.

Some other facts in the report stated that 73.4% of U.S. homes have a computer, 26.7% own or rent an MP3 player, and 16.4% have a PDA.
