Ford and Toyota did not have any tie-up talks
The automaker in the USA got pretty excited on the news that the chairman of Toyota Motor Corp. met with the chief executive of Ford Motor Co.
However, it is now clear that the two executives did not talk about any possible collaborative affair. Toyota spokesman Tomomi Imai spoke about this meeting: “It was just a get-acquainted meeting.”
Japanese business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun had instead reported that Ford CEO Alan Mulally and Toyota Chairman Fujio Cho had earlier met in Japan and that could have been a step in potential partnership negotiations.
Ford spokesman Oscar Suris had this to say: “I can’t confirm or deny the report other than to say that we have discussions with participants in our industry all the time.”
Market analysts are also not very sure on why Toyota would want to collaborate with Ford considering they are doing so well on their own. The company has already overtaken Ford in terms of sales in USA and might even displace GM as the top automaker in the world next year.
