Alcatel-Lucent takes over UMTS mobile access business from Nortel
Telecom industry giant Alcatel Lucent has confirmed that they have completed the acquisition of the high-speed UMTS mobile access business from Nortel.
The deal was worth around $320 million and this would help them make some inroads into the growing markets like China.
Alcatel-Lucent claims that they would gain around 40 customers for their UMTS services worldwide through this deal.
Nortel sold this division considering they were losing money in this operation and had little chances of turning it around.
Mary Chan, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s wireless activities spoke on this deal completion: “The pre-integration work has progressed well. Our aim is to achieve the optimum combination of Alcatel-Lucent and Nortel’s technologies, with minimum customer disruption. We are well positioned to capture the UMTS market growth opportunity.”
