ZTE closes down their mobile assembly plant in Africa
Chinese telecommunications company ZTE Corp. has revealed that they have closed down their mobile phone assembly plant in Africa.
This was incidentally the only such plant in the African region. This plant was established in Abuja, Nigeria in 2005…
They had setup this plant to distribute ZTE handsets in Africa. The plant manufactured two flip phones which were sold in the region. They had received the clearance from the Nigeria Communication Commission for this plant.
However, the plant did not prove to be profitable for the company and they currently have no plans to re-open it in the near future.
They however have plans to setup another assembly plant in Zambia from where they aim to supply southern African countries. These include Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi, and Botswana.
Market analysts believe that their phones would find a limited market in this region which is dominated by cheap phones from global manufacturers including Nokia and Motorola.
