Canon to acquire Toshiba’s stake in their joint venture making flat-panel display
Japanese tech company Canon as said that they would be acquiring the stake owned by Toshiba in their flat-panel display venture.
This would be to resolve the patent disputes with another company named Nano-Proprietary Inc. in the United States.
This unit was established in 2004 and Canon would now fully own it. They are developing a new type of thin panels for television sets to compete with South Korean rivals Samsung and LG.
Canon had to take this step after Nano-Proprietary filed a lawsuit against them claiming that their 1999 agreement to license technology to Canon did not extend to Toshiba.
Canon further said in a statement that they would manufacture the displays on a smaller scale at its own plant for the launch in Japan.
