Maruti: India can become the world No 1 in small cars
Maruti Udyog managing director Jagdish Khattar has said that India has the potential to become the world’s largest maker of small cars in the world. India is one the verge of becoming the second largest maker of small cars after Japan.
He said: “I am convinced that we (as a country) can never be a major player in the global automobile industry as a whole. But we can certainly achieve domination in the small car segment. We are already the No 2 small car maker in the world and, as a country, we should build on this lead.”
The country saw sales of more than 5.3 lakh small cars in the market in the first nine months of this fiscal year. Around a lakh cars were exported to international markets.
The market is growing at more than 20% at this moment and if this growth continues India would be the second largest small car producer after Japan.
Brazil currently holds the second spot and might lose the title to India this year.
