Telcel cellphone network suffers massive downtime

A technical fault in the Telcel cellphone network resulted in massive problems for the mobile phone users in Mexico.

The network owned by world’s third richest man, tycoon Carlos Slim crashed for a while.

America Movil spokeswoman Patricia Ramirez spoke on the problems faced by the company: “When part of the network loses service, others back it up. But there was a serious saturation problem and it started to affect other parts of the city.”

The mobile service provider has a subscriber base of 40 million users across the country. The services were restored in a couple of hours. The company claims that the connectivity was 90 percent functional by late afternoon.

The company controls about 70 percent of Mexico’s cellphone market.
