MobiTV now has more than 2 million customers
MobiTV is a company providing services to customers to receive cable TV channels on mobile phones. The company has now said that they are now serving more than 2 million users.
With this, they have now doubled their customer base in less than a year. The service was initially launched more than three years ago by Sprint.
It provides real time feed in addition to made for mobile content. They support feeds of cable channels such as CNN, CNBC, Fox News Channel and The Weather Channel. And they provide mobile broadcasts from channels like ESPN and ABC News on their services.
This service is now offered by more than 30 wireless carriers including Cingular Wireless and Alltel Corp. in the United States and 3 and Orange in the United Kingdom.
However, the company is also now likely to face more competition as television networks are themselves providing similar facilities to their customers.

What most people seem to miss is that the existing telecom network is not going to be able to handle the success of companies like MobiTV. Right now, everyday you get dropped connections and poor quality. What’s gonna happen when the bandwidth requirements explode a hundred fold, a thousand fold?
That’s why many carriers are just starting to upgrade their networks with next generation open source gear like ATCA and microTCA. Also, you may see companies like Enea (www.enea.com) and others providing new middleware solutions that will enable carriers to provide improved quality and connections while at the same time dropping prices.
