Rumors: Alltel trying to sell itself

Media group The Wall Street Journal has reported that the telecom service provider Alltel has stepped up efforts to sell itself to another major player in the market.

Potential buyers include AT&T Inc., Verizon and Sprint Nextel.

The news report claimed that the company has made overtures to AT&T and they have shown interest in taking over the Little Rock, Arkansas based wireless company.

AT&T however is reported to be somewhat skeptical about this purchase due to antitrust regulatory problems. There are further issues with technology integration with Alltel’s network.

Another possible obstacle in such a deal would be the current market capitalization of Alltel which currently is at around $22 billion.
