Vonage told to pay up Verizon on patent infringement
VoIP Company Vonage continues to face more problems. They have been ordered by the courts to pay Verizon Communications $58 million.
This payments are to be made for three patents owned by Verizon which the jury found Vonage is infringing upon. Fortunately for them, this amount is far less than the $197 million that Verizon had requested.
However, it is not yet clear whether these payments would let Vonage to continue using Verizon’s technology. Verizon lawyers have now filed a request that Vonage should be barred from further use of the patented technology. This could prove fatal for the company if it is granted.
Verizon had originally sued Vonage claiming that they infringed on five patents. Dan Webb, Verizon lawyer said in a statement: “This is a significant victory for Verizon. It shows that companies that infringe patents can be held liable.”
