Seagate encrypted hard disks to soon ship with notebooks
Seagate Technology LLC has said that products featuring their new built-in encryption technology are expected to be launched in the retail market soon.
The company said that ASI Computer Technologies would be launching their products loaded with their hard disks which come with a chip that makes it impossible for anyone to read data off the disk. Even booting off the computer is impossible unless the user authenticates himself.
Dave Reinsel, a storage industry analyst at market research firm IDC spoke about these new products introduced by Seagate: “I can’t help but think that this kind of hard drive would become a standard issue on corporate laptops.”
The company has integrated their encryption technology in the hard disks itself. It requires users to have a key, or password, before being able to access the disk drive or boot up the machine. The company claims that without this authentication, the hard disk would be as good as useless.
