Nederland considering removing ban from Segway
Nederland’s new transportation minister has said that he has ordered to conduct a safety review of Segways. The government is now considering removing the ban on the self-balancing scooters in public places.
The government had banned Segway from public areas earlier this year. Camiel Eurlings said in a statement that he was pretty “positive as a minister about innovations, but we’re going to approach this carefully.”
The ban was implemented as the country’s Traffic Agency decided last year that the vehicle was a form of moped and for them to be legal, they needed to have breaks. Segway lacks breaks as it stops automatically when the rider leans backward.
Segway Nederland director Piet Kruijt claims that tests in other nation have proved that the Segway is safe despite lacking breaks and they hope to get it legalized on public roads in the country.
Until the order is reversed, the people in Holland would be required to keep their Segways indoors.
