Broadcom has a patent infringement problem with Qualcomm

Broadcom Corp. has asked a government panel that they should implement a ban on import of cell phone products featuring chips made by Qualcomm which infringes on their patented technologies.

Scott McGregor chief executive of Broadcom Corp. appeared before the U.S. International Trade Commission saying that such a ban is not going to hurt the consumer in any form. It is also not going to disrupt the wireless telecommunications market, or threaten public safety as claimed by Qualcomm in its defense.

McGregor added that if the ban is implemented “things will continue just as they have, with the exception that a subset of cellular devices that contain infringing … chips would no longer be available to be imported into the United States.”

Qualcomm has argued in its defense that such a ban would hurt consumers, by reducing competition among wireless telecommunications providers, and be bad for public safety agencies that use wireless networks.
