Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless against a ban on mobile phones featuring Qualcomm chips
Broadcom has just asked the U.S. trade agency to implement a ban on the import of mobile phones featuring Qualcomm hardware which infringes on their patented technologies.
However, two major mobile service provider in the region Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless have told the U.S. International Trade Commission that such a ban would hurt their customers and hamper their transition to cutting-edge data services.
These companies would be massively affected by such a ban as it would make it complicated for them to sell products featuring the EV-DO technology developed by Qualcomm.
Verizon chief technology officer, Richard Lynch said in his statement: “If Verizon Wireless cannot offer EV-DO-capable handsets, then there is no business case for continuing to upgrade Verizon Wireless’s network to EV-DO. This will harm Verizon Wireless’s business for years to come. It will also harm consumers and domestic competition in the wireless broadband market while depositioning the U.S. Leadership in wireless data.”

Is Broadcom crazy?! They didn’t invent CDMA and they aren’t that big of a player in that market. The only 2 companies that don’t use Qualcomm chips are Motorola and Nokia, and Nokia is no longer making CDMA phones. So by not selling any phone with a Qualcomm EV-DO chip in it, would cripple the market. Broadcom would single handily stop the sale of phones to 400 million CDMA customers worldwide! No company should have that right! The heads over at Broadcom need to grow up and fix this issue like adults. Not punish every CDMA customers on Earth!!
