Dayanidhi Maran talks about possible PC tariff cut

World’s second largest personal computer making company Dell wants to become a bigger player in the Indian market. However, they suffer from the excessive taxes applied by the Indian government on component imports.

Dell CEO Michael Dell on a recent visit to the country had said that the government should consider reducing the tariffs on computers and it looks like his suggestion has been heard.

Indian IT and communications minister Dayanidhi Maran has now taken up this issue with the prime minister and the finance minister. The aim is to promote higher investment flows to the sector.

Maran said in a statement on the topic: “I do agree with Mr. Dell to promote the use of computers and we are asking for 0% duty on computers. Besides assembling computers, manufacturing must also take place in India.”

Dayanidhi must ensure that manufacturing takes place in India by Dell and others or else Indian hardware talent will go down.
