Toyota not invited at White House to talk energy policy

Toyota is the second largest automaker in the world. They just overtook Chrysler in the US market and are expected to overtake Ford this year. They even have the potential to overtake GM as the largest automaker in the World this year.

Yet, they are not invited to the White House to discuss the US energy policy. President Bush is expected to discuss proposals to cut fuel consumption by 20 percent over 10 years by encouraging gasoline alternatives and imposing tougher mileage standards.

These new talks are a follow up to talks Alan Morally of Ford, Rick Wagoner of GM and Tom Lasorda of Chrysler had with President Bush four months ago on similar energy issues.

Incidentally, these three automakers are struggling in their home markets and are failing to bring customers to their showrooms as they are increasingly buying more and more of Japanese cars.

Toyota is not disappointed however. A company spokesperson had this to say: “I think we understand the politics of it and understand they have particular issues that have to be addressed.”
