Research in Motion settles BlackBerry lawsuit
Makers of popular handheld device Blackberry, Research in Motion has confirmed that the company has managed to reach a settlement with NTP. The company would be paying $612.5 million, which includes a perpetual license on the patents, which were the base of the whole lawsuit.
This news came after it became clear that RIM was nearing losing the lawsuit, which would have resulted in them shutting down their services in the United States. NTP co-founder Donal Stout said in a statement: “We are pleased to have reached an amicable settlement with RIM. We believe that the settlement is in the best interests of all parties, including the US government and all other BlackBerry users in the US.”
Both the parties had already trying settling their issues in March 2005 to settle the case for $450m. However, the deal fell through midway. A court jury has already ruled that RIM indeed infringes on NTP’s patents.
