Nokia pays Qualcomm US$20 million to license some of its patents
Mobile phone maker Nokia has revealed that they have paid Qualcomm US$20 million to license some of its patents which are related to some of their 3G (third generation) mobile phones through the second quarter of 2007.
The two companies are involved in several lawsuits related to patents. Qualcomm has even threatened that they might no longer share any patents with Nokia in the near future.
Nokia and Qualcomm are also in the process of renegotiating a patent licensing agreement that expires on April 9.
Nokia said that the payments are related to licenses that Qualcomm provides through the European Telecommunication Standardization Institute (ETSI).
The company added that they believe that these fees are fair and reasonable compensation for use of Qualcomm patents in its UMTS handsets.
