Licensing agreement between Nokia-Qualcomm has expired
Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones while Qualcomm is the company behind the CDMA technology which powers some of the largest mobile networks in the world.
The two companies have been involved in several lawsuits against each other related to patent disputes and these could expand now that the licensing agreement between them has expired.
A Qualcomm spokesperson confirmed that the agreement was to expire in each time zone at 12:01 a.m. local time on April 9.
Qualcomm has demanded to renew terms of their 2001 licensing pact while Nokia has been demanding that Qualcomm reduce their royalty fees charged on each and every CDMA phone manufactured by them.
Nokia spokesman William Plummer had this to say about CDMA technology users: “These kinds of license negotiations are a normal course of business. Customers recognize this and understand these types of discussions take time to be resolved.”
