Virgin Media files a lawsuit against British Sky Broadcasting Group
Virgin Media has announced that they are now taking legal actions against British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC. Virgin Media has filed the lawsuit in the High Court under Britain’s Competition Act and the European Commission treaty.
They are claiming that the BSkyB is abusing their market dominating position. Virgin has filed this lawsuit considering Sky has rejected an offer to solve the dispute through arbitration by an independent expert.
Virgin had to stop broadcasting basic BSkyB channels after they failed to agree on pricing for the channels. This means that the consumer of Virgin Media no longer can see their favorite television shows including “Lost,” “24,” and “The Simpsons”.
Virgin Media Chief Executive Officer Steve Burch added: “This dispute is one very specific example of how U.K. consumers are being denied the benefits of a diverse, dynamic and competitive pay-TV market. Litigation is obviously a serious step and a last resort but we are determined to have these issues resolved as quickly and fairly as possible.”
