Chevy Spark launch could result in capacity problems for General Motors

GM in India is due to launch their Chevrolet Spark in India this week. The car is expected to be priced competitively and faces a lot of competition.

Market analysts expect the car to have a good launch as a lot of potential customers are waiting for this Daewoo Matiz replacement in India.

However, there could be some bad news for the prospective buyers as the company is likely to be able to manufacture just around 2,000 units every month in the initial months.

GM would be launching the Spark with a 4-cylinder 1000cc engine. They are currently manufacturing the car at their original plant in Halol at Gujarat. This plant already manufactures several other models for the company including Chevrolet U-VA, Aveo, Optra, SRV and the Tavera.

The capacity of the plant is around 7000 units a month. A mass selling vehicle like Spark would eat up the capacity pretty fast. P Balendran, director and vice-president (corporate affairs) had this to say about the possibilities: “I cannot talk on production numbers of the vehicle (Chevrolet Spark), but the car will be built at our Halol facility. We won’t export the Spark…. the vehicle is built only for the domestic market.”
