TDK to stop manufacturing CDs and DVDs

Japanese tech company TDK would soon stop manufacturing digital media for CD and DVD Drives. The company has decided to shut down its Luxembourg plant in May. This plant was capable of churning out as many as seven million CD-Rs and eight million DVD-Rs per month.

The company said in a statement on this decision: “This decision completes TDK’s withdrawal from the manufacturing of recordable CD and DVD products.”

TDK had to take this step after realizing that the margins in these products have now reached minimal levels and it made no sense to continue manufacturing CD and DVD media for retail sale in the market.

On the other hand, raw materials required to manufacture these disks has become more expensive in the recent times. This made it even more complicated. TDK would however still sell CDs and DVDs under their brand, which they would get from other companies.
