BBC and ITV to launch Freesat service
The BBC Trust has said that they have now given their approval for the launch of the Freesat service. This new service would allow television viewers to get free-to-air channels through a satellite dish.
This project is being developed as a joint venture between BBC and ITV. This would provide the viewers in UK with an alternative to BSkyB and cable to receive digital channels.
This service would require the customer to pay once for the equipment. After that the telecast would remain free. The response to this project has been good from the customer who believes that it is a good value deal for all.
BBC added that they believe that the project is in public interest and would not adversely affect the broadcasting market.
Acting Chairman of the BBC Trust, Chitra Bharucha added: “Envisaged as a joint venture, Freesat will ensure the public remain in control of how they access the BBC’s television channels and radio networks for which they have already paid. It is guaranteed to remain subscription free, ensuring that the benefits of digital television do not equal ‘pay television’.”
