Mobile phone sales crosses a quarter of a billion units in first three months of the year
Market research firm Gartner has said in a report that the world market saw sales of mobile phones crossing 250 million units in the first three months of the year itself.
The improved sales were mostly due to improved demand in Asian countries like China, India and Japan.
Gartner reported shipments of around 257.4 million units, up 14% compared to the same quarter a year ago. The sales were somewhat down in the Western Europe and North America as the holiday season was up which usually sees the maximum sales during the year.
The research firm further said that they expect the mobile phone shipments to cross 1.15 billion units this year which would be around a 16% improvement compared to previous year.
Nokia was the market leader during the first quarter of the year with around 92 million handsets sold in the period. Their market share was double that of the nearest rival which was US based Motorola.
Gartner further said that Nokia is expected to dominate Motorola this year considering the poor lineup of mobile phones by the US manufacturer. Motorola has promised to launch new exciting products this year to enhance their sales but it might just be a little too late for them.
