GM India aims to capture 20% of small car market by 2010
GM India has set themselves an ambitious target of achieving a 20% market share in the small car segment in the Indian automotive market.
The aim seems to be improbable considering the domination of Maruti Suzuki in India. GM has launched some good products in this segment in the recent times including the Chevrolet Spark.
General Motors India General Manager (Sales) Sumit Sawhney said in a statement on the company’s hopes: “We would like to have strong presence in the small car segment in the coming years while considering the potential it offers in country. That is why we have targeted a market share of 15-20% by 2010”
This segment of the India automotive market accounts for around 70% of all sales in the domestic automotive sector.
GM India further stated that by the end of the current year, they believe that the compact cars would have a share of 45% in their total sales.
The company further said that they are aiming to sell around 75,000 cars by the end of this year and to achieve this they are working hard on expanding their dealership network around the country.
