GM to speed up work on fuel cell development

US based automaker General Motors has said that they have now accelerated the development work on their hydrogen fuel cell program.

The company has now shifted work from laboratory to engineering groups. GM aims to develop this technology to supply with their automobiles.

GM said that they are now shifting more than 500 fuel cell engineers and experts from advanced development laboratories to engineering functions.

The company aims to have these advanced vehicles running on the roads by 2012. GM added that more than 400 engineers would now become part of its powertrain group to begin production engineering of fuel cell systems. Remaining would be joining the group working on integrating fuel cells into future vehicles.

GM faces intense competition from Japanese automakers like Toyota and Honda in all their major markets especially USA.
