Sanyo collaborates with Quanta for flat-panel televisions

The market for flat panel television sets is growing fast and none of the smaller players wants to be out of the contention to take a slice of the bigger pie. As a result, Japan based Sanyo has announced that they are collaborating with Taiwan based Quanta Computers to form a joint venture to manufacture these television sets.

This new venture would be selling television sets under the Sanyo brand and would draw on the Japanese group’s global research, production, and sales operations. They would also benefit from the Quanta’s low-cost factories in China.

The collaboration aims to become one of the major players in the flat panel television market in the coming years. They currently trail market leaders and giants of the market Sony and Sharp and are planning to restructure their business to get back to profitability.

Quanta is already the world’s largest contract notebook computer maker and this would boost their capabilities of manufacturing liquid crystal display panels for the television sector.
