New York Times could end payment only web access

The New York Post has reported in a news item that the The New York Times Co. is now planning to drop the charges for accessing its columnists and Op-Ed pieces.

The news media company charges a fee to let people access some content on a section of its Web site known as TimesSelect.

They charge a fee of $8 per month for this content which is otherwise available for free for subscribers to their print edition.

The news article said that this decision has been taken by the top executives at the company. Though it would still take sometime to happen as they would have to revamp the technology powering the website.

A New York Times representative did not comment on this rumor but said: “We continue to evaluate the best approach for NYTimes.com.”
