Fab 68: Intel starts working on their China microprocessor factory
Microprocessor industry giant Intel has confirmed that they have now started building a $2.5-billion chip factory in China.
The work started this weekend and the company now hopes to maintain a strong foothold in the world’s second largest PC market.
This new unit has been codenamed Fab 68 and it is expected to become operational by 2010.
It would then become Intel’s first 300mm wafer fabrication plant in Asia. The factory is being built at a location in Dalian, in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province.
Intel Chairman Craig Barrett had this to say on these new developments: “Fab 68 will have world-class infrastructure and be an integral part of our global manufacturing network and bring us closer to our customers and partners in China. Besides bringing advanced chipset manufacturing, Intel’s presence will help attract investment from other segments of the integrated circuit industry to the city.”
