Palm Inc shows improved earnings as Treo sells nicely

Palm Inc has reported improved earnings as the company is selling their Treo range of PDAs in huge numbers. The company’s earnings beat analysts’ forecasts. Palm also launched their first product powered by Microsoft technology, which has brought them more customers this quarter.

Their earning forecasts for the coming months is also now better than market expectations and this helped the company improve upon their share prices in the stock markets. Palm also claimed that they have boosted its share of the U.S. Smartphone market to 30 percent from 22 percent a year earlier.

The company has benefited immensely from the lawsuit that threatened to shut down the e-mail service of popular BlackBerry devices developed by Research in Motion (RIM). RIM has finally settled their disputes with patent-holding company NTP and could create problems for Palm in the coming months.

Palm added in their report that they shipped 564,000 Treo smartphones in the third quarter. In addition, phones sold through cell phone carriers and other distributors doubled to 569,000.
