Toshiba sells 90,000 units of HD-A2 HD DVD players last weekend
Toshiba’s low cost HD DVD player HD-A2 was being offered at a price of USD 99 at some of the largest retailing stores in the US market last weekend.
This sale was huge as the company managed to sell as many as 90,000 units from Friday to Sunday.
The console is otherwise priced just below the USD 200 price point.
Lower costs of these media players is crucial for the company to popularize the technology. Toshiba is facing competition with Sony over the next generation storage format. Sony is offering their own Blu-Ray format.
Sony has a major advantage over Toshiba considering they are integrating a Blu-Ray drive in each of the Playstation 3 console being sold in the market.
