Samsung, Hynix increase memory prices
Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor are the two top memory chip manufacturers in the world. And the latest news coming in from these two companies is that they have increased the prices of memory chip modules for their biggest customers considering the shortage of chips in the market.
This shortage is likely to last for the first quarter of this year and would be affecting the sellers of personal computers in the short term. Hynix has also confirmed that they have raised the prices of their memory chips by around 5-10% for their customers.
The problem is magnified by the fact that these companies are now concentrating on making modules for the consumer electronics like digital music players (Apple iPod and the likes) and cameras. PC manufacturers like Dell have to suffer due to this kind of shortage.
On an average the prices of memory modules for the personal computer platform has risen by almost 38 percent this year. The last year alone saw the prices of memory fall down by around 66%. The interesting part is that the demand is growing stronger and stronger in the PC market and these companies have raised the prices instead of taking steps to meet up with the growing demand.
