GM considering developing an 800cc engine for India

GM has said that they are open to the possibility of manufacturing an 800cc engine for their Spark platform for the Indian market.

A company representative said in a statement: “Our existing Spark platform can produce a mini-car with a 0.8-litre engine. I am not closing the door to such a possibility for the Indian market. Particularly with the small car market expanding, a number of opportunities are being created inside one segment.”

This could give them a product which could take on the cheaper products in the market including Maruti Alto and Hyundai Santro.

Incidentally the company is already selling Matiz with an 800cc engine in the European market.

They are also considering the possibility of entering into the segment which is being created by the upcoming Tata Nano car. Nano would have a smaller engine and would be priced aggressively at around USD 2500.
