America Online is now just AOL, a limited liability company
In an expected move, Time Warner has announced that their internet division America Online would now be known as simply AOL. And they have also converted this corporation into a limited liability company.
Jon Miller, chairman and chief executive of AOL LLC said in a statement confirming this transition: “Our Company long ago accomplished the mission implied by our old name. We literally got America online. Our new corporate identity better reflects our expanded mission — to make everyone’s online experience better.”
It is not going to change much for the regular customers and users of the company as America Online is also known by their initials. Their primary website itself is AOL.com. The company originated as Quantum Computer Services in 1985 and started offering the AOL online service in 1989. It was later renamed to America Online Inc. in 1991.
America Online then merged with Time Warner Inc. in 2001 to form AOL Time Warner Inc. This unit was then named to just Time Warner Inc after the company suffered massively in their internet operations as cable internet and DSL services took away a large customer base from the company which provided dialup internet services.
