NTT DoCoMo suffers a drop in market share in Japan

NTT DoCoMo might no longer remain the dominating mobile service provider in the Japanese market as their market share has now dropped to below 50%.

This is the first time in almost 10 years that their market share has gone down so low.

The company is facing intense competition in the domestic market from rival players including KDDI and Softbank Mobile.

Softbank has been pretty aggressive in the market leading to several price wars between the operators in Japan.

Japan’s Telecommunication Carriers Association reported that by the end of last month NTT DoCoMo had 53.4 million subscribers. This came to around 49.7 percent of Japan’s total 107.4 million mobile telephone subscriptions.
