Nissan, NEC collaborating to manufacture lithium-ion batteries

Nissan Motor has announced that they are now collaborating with NEC Tokin on a new plant that would manufacture lithium-ion batteries.

These batteries would power their next generation automobiles and the production would begin sometime next year.

Lithium-ion batteries are already used in hybrid cars. Nissan has plans to start manufacturing all electric models in the future.

The new entity has been named Automotive Energy Supply Corp. The plant would initially have a manufacturing capacity to build 13,000 units a year.

They aim to expand the production capacity to 65,000 units in 2011.
