Sony to outsource LCDs from overseas to meet demand
Consumer electronics giant Sony has said that they are considering buying larger panels for its flat-screen televisions from overseas LCD suppliers. This is to meet the high demand from the market for these electronics equipments.
They are not the first one to do so. Competitors like Sharp and Funai Electric are already securing liquid crystal display panels for LCD TVs from Taiwan suppliers to cut costs and gain a major part of the $25 billion LCD TV market.
Sony president Ryoji Chubachi told reporters on their plans: “It depends on market conditions. If demand increases, we will strengthen our purchases from ODM or OEM makers.” He was on a visit to the country to launch company’s new products.
Sony is already acquiring smaller panels for laptop computers from LCD suppliers and run a joint venture with Samsung for supplies of larger panels to Sony.
