Sony and Samsung to build a new $2 billion LCD line
Commercial electronics equipment makers Sony and Samsung are together building a new $2 billion LCD line. Samsung are already the world’s second largest maker of large liquid crystal displays and along with Sony plans to capture a large part of the demand in the market.
The two companies have formed a joint entity named S-LCD Corp. and they would be building “eighth-generation” LCD line. The two companies said in a joint statement: “Samsung will target further business expansion in the LCD panel market for LCD TVs and Sony will continue to proactively focus on cost-competitive and high-quality large screen products targeting an expansion of its LCD TV business.”
This new facility would start production of these LCD panels in the autumn of 2007 and would have a monthly capacity of 50,000 units. This unit would adopt a motherglass size of approximately 2.2 meters by 2.5 meters.
These two companies started their collaboration with a $2 billion joint venture in 2004 to produce LCD TV panels and have been working together since then.
