YouTube to provide Olympics coverage in some countries
Google owned video sharing service YouTube has announced that it has now signed up a deal with International Olympic Committee to provide limited coverage of the event in 77 countries across the world.
They would be broadcasting this coverage on a dedicated channel during the games in Beijing.
Timo Lumme, the IOC’s director of television, marketing services spoke about their deal with YouTube: “For the first time in Olympic history we will have complete global online coverage. It will provide Olympic footage to the young generations of sports fans who are already going online for entertainment.”
Patrick Walker, YouTube’s director of partnerships for Europe, Middle East and sponsors added: “This is really more about the accessibility. YouTube hopes to seize more sponsorship opportunities by extending the partnership with the IOC in coming years.”
This coverage would only be accessible in those countries where the rights to broadcasting the events have not been sold. These include South Korea, India and Nigeria.
