India lightens requirements for international news magazines to launch cheap local editions

International media companies would now be able to launch cheaper localized editions in the Indian market.

The Indian government has now made it possible for them to publish local editions with local news content and advertising.

Till now they were only allowed to bring in their global editions in India with some local advertising.

However, this ruling for now only applies to foreign news magazines. International newspapers would not get this benefit.

Ashish Bagga, CEO of Living Media India spoke about this new development: “We welcome this decision. It is, in fact, a result of us lobbying for it for the past three years. This will encourage a number of publishers to bring in foreign news magazines. Next, we expect the government to raise the foreign direct investment limit from 26 per cent to 49 per cent for such magazines.”

Fortune, Forbes, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, Economist are some of the magazines which are interested in launching their local editions in the Indian market.
