eBay to ban sale of ivory products on its service
US based online auction service eBay has announced that starting next year sellers would not be able to offer ivory products on its web services.
The company wrote in a blog post that this decision was taken to ensure the protection of African and Asian elephants.
eBay had already banned cross-border sales of ivory products on its service last year.
A company representative said: “The team concluded that we simply can’t ensure that ivory listed for sale on eBay is in compliance with the complex regulations that govern its sale.”
there are some exceptions to the rules but even then the products would have to be manufactured before 1900.
Teresa Telecky, policy director for Humane Society International spoke about this decision taken by eBay: “EBay’s decision to wash its hands of the uncontrollable, bloody ivory trade is commendable and should set an example for others.”
