Postal department takes on Courier Companies with a bill!
In a move, which is going to disappoint a lot of people, the Postal Department of India is seeking a law, which would bar courier companies from carrying any ‘letter’ weighing below 300 grams!
This means that people would not be able to use the services of courier companies for sending small packages and documents. Instead, they would have to rely upon totally undependable postal department of India!
This bill is also going to drastically curtail the role of courier companies in the country considering a lot of traffic is generated by these kinds of packages. The department of post is also asking the government to regulate the Rs3,000 crore private courier industry that has as many as 2500 players in the market.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has expectedly described the bill as “unfortunate” and against the spirit of liberalization and globalization. Frankly speaking, if this bill is passed, it would result in a monopoly of the government department in the market and people would have no choice but to take the risk of sending documents through their services.
